Threads of Intention: January Block - Introspection

I’ve been having so much fun re-making my Threads of Intention quilt sampler with a fresh set of fabrics. This time, I’m using Bird is the Word collection by Kimberly Kight from Ruby Star Society, and it’s amazing how different it feels with these prints.

The first block, Introspection, combines two favorite quilting techniques—Half Square Triangles (HSTs) and Flying Geese. It’s such a fun way to dive into the project, focusing on both precision and creativity right from the start.

Getting Started: Organization is Key

Before diving in, I prepped by cutting all the fabric for the sampler at once. This step helped me stay organized and ready for each block. I used the included labels to keep track of the pieces, clipping them onto the fabric with wonder clips. For storage, my go-to solution is a Sterilite bin—it’s the perfect size for keeping everything tidy and accessible! I label each bin with a wet-erase marker so I can easily see which project it holds!

All the fabric is prepped and ready to go! Wonder clips and labels keep everything organized and make piecing so much easier.

Tips for Perfect Half Square Triangles (HSTs)

Half Square Triangles are a staple in so many quilt designs, and for good reason—they’re versatile and fun to make! Here’s how I approached them for the Introspection block:

Chain Piece Like a Pro: Chain piecing is my favorite way to quickly sew multiple HSTs. It’s efficient and keeps the workflow moving smoothly. I marked the diagonal with my Hera marker (see the flying geese below) and I help keep them lined up with my cluck-cluck sew diagonal seam tape right on my machine surface!

Cutting Made Easy: To separate chain-pieced units, I rely on a small blade saver. It’s a simple tool, but it makes the process a breeze, and helps use up those old rotary cutter blades!!

Trimming for Precision: I recommend using a Bloc-Loc ruler for trimming your HSTs. The ruler’s center ridge aligns perfectly with the seam, ensuring clean and even cuts every time.

Tackling Flying Geese with Confidence

Flying Geese are a key part of this block, and once you master them, they make block construction so much faster and easier.

Here are a few tools that make perfect Flying Geese so much easier:

Bloc-Loc ruler: Ensures the quarter-inch seam allowance at the tips of the ‘wings,’ making assembly a breeze.

Rotating cutting mat: Keeps everything lined up while trimming for precise results.

Hera marker: Quickly marks lines on fabric—bonus points for being able to mark multiple layers at once, with no worries about washing out!

Plan Before You Sew

Before sewing, I laid out all the pieces to make sure everything was oriented correctly. This step saved me from an unexpected date with the seam ripper—trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way!

The Finished Block

After assembling the pieces and double-checking my layout, the first block of the sampler came together beautifully! I’m thrilled with how it turned out, and the best part is that all the fabric for the February block is already prepped and ready to go.
