Threads of Intention: February Block - Radiance

Welcome back to the Threads of Intention Block of the Month! I hope you enjoyed making Introspection last month and are ready to dive into our next block. This month’s design builds on the skills we’ve already practiced while introducing some helpful piecing techniques.

As always, I’ve got a few tips and suggestions to make this block even easier to piece together, so read on before you start sewing!

Arranging Your Block – All Four Corners are Different!

One key detail to keep in mind for this block is Step 8, where you’ll arrange the sub-units before assembling them. Each of the four corners is different, so take your time laying everything out before sewing. I always recommend stepping back and checking for any rotated pieces—it’s an easy way to avoid a seam ripper later!

Notice how we pressed toward the A4 piece in both subunits, which makes it easy to nest the seams when assembling this block.

Two Ways to trim your Flying Geese

Accurate flying geese make a big difference in your finished block, and trimming them correctly is key! Here are two ways to get crisp, well-sized units:

Using the Bloc-loc ruler to trim flying geese blocks.

1️⃣ Bloc-Loc Ruler Method:

The Bloc-Loc ruler makes it super easy to trim while ensuring the 1/4” seam allowance where the wings of the geese meet. If you have one, I highly recommend using it!

2️⃣ Regular Quilting Ruler Method:

If you don’t have a Bloc-Loc, no problem! You can trim with a standard quilting ruler.

Tip: Line up the ruler so the geese overlap exactly at the 3 1/4” mark and 1/4” down from the edge to maintain accuracy.

Plan Before You Sew

Just like in Step 8, taking a moment to arrange all your pieces before sewing them together in Step 19 will help you double-check placement and prevent mistakes. A quick layout check can save a lot of frustration!
