The Archie Backpack: My New Favorite Project!

I recently completed a project that I am absolutely in love with—The Archie Backpack by Knot and Thread Design! It came at just the right time as I was getting tired of lugging my laptop around in a giant hiking pack. This backpack is not only practical but also a joy to make. Let me walk you through the process and show off the features with lots of photos.

Let’s start by talking about this gorgeous fabric. I used the beautiful Heirloom line from Sharon Holland for Art Gallery Fabrics. To add texture and dimension, I quilted it with the Gingham Posies panto. The quilting really brought the fabric to life and added a lovely, tactile element to the bag.

Did you know you can quilt small projects on the longarm? It’s my favorite way to get a great start on a new bag.

The Archie backpack doesn’t have a liner, like some bags do. It’s made with quilted fabric, so if you want a nice, clean inside, you need to bind it. This can be tricky…

My best advice for this part - the Wonder Clip! I use SO MANY wonder clips (which you may know is not really my style - usually!

Here’s the finished product! The Archie Backpack is both stylish and functional. It’s got that handmade charm but with a polished, professional look. I’m thrilled with how it turned out.

A Peek Inside!

When you open the bag, you’ll find plenty of pockets to keep everything organized. There are side pockets perfect for snacks, and smaller pockets inside for pens, a notepad, or other small items.
The star feature for me is the laptop sleeve. It’s perfectly sized to keep my laptop secure and protected while on the go. No more carrying around a bulky hiking pack!

This project has been such a fun experience. The Archie Backpack is not only a great way to carry my laptop and other essentials but also a beautiful showcase for the quilted fabric. If you’re thinking about making your own bag, I highly recommend this pattern. And remember, it’s usually only about $50 to have a small project quilted by me, so keep that in mind for your next bag make!

P.S. Check out my reel to find out about the little bonus I made! I had just enough leftover quilted fabric to make an adorable mini pouch. It’s a modified Holland Pouch by Kristina at Center Street Quilts. This little pouch is perfect for accessories like chargers, headphones, or any other small items that tend to get lost in the bottom of the bag. I was so excited about it that I literally danced around the house showing it to my family!
