Threads of Intention BOM – March Block: Onward
Welcome back to the Threads of Intention Block of the Month! This month, we’re continuing to build on our skills with a block that combines Half Square Triangles (HSTs) with a new technique: Triangle in a Square blocks!
Triangle in a Square is one of my absolute favorite units to make, and this block is the perfect chance to practice using templates to get those crisp, precise points. I’ve included a few tips below to help you along the way!
Mastering Triangle in a Square
If you haven’t worked with Triangle in a Square blocks before, don’t worry! This unit creates a sharp, dynamic shape while keeping construction simple.
✨ Tips for Success:
✔ Use your templates carefully! Accuracy in cutting will set you up for success when piecing.
✔ If using the paper template, align a ruler along the edge to help cut straight. This prevents wobbly cuts and ensures precision.

Assembling your Triangle in a Square Blocks
It can be tricky the first time, so check this out!
Notice the little corner that sticks out at the top! The bottom left corner also will stick out over the Center Triangle.
This isn’t really intuitive, but when you fold the block open, it will make more sense! Give it a try. Trust me!
When it comes time to trim, make sure you don’t lose that nice point - keep 1/4” seam allowance!
Plan Before You Sew
As always, arrange all your pieces before sewing them together! This ensures those pointy stars are pointing in the right direction :)
How to achieve Perfect Points!
Remember when you trimmed, you were careful to keep that 1/4” seam allowance at the top? It’s easy to lose those sharp corners, but if you use your seam lines to help, you can get a nice pointy corner!
